To conclude the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel’s birth, Austrian baritone Benjamin Sattlecker and pianist-conductor Alexandra Helldorff are releasing Don Quichotte à Dulcinée (ANCLEF 20251201) as the first digital single from their upcoming 2026/27 album on the composer’s day of passing. This piece was originally commissioned for the 1933 film Don Quixote, but the director ultimately rejected the score. The cycle features three art songs offering a final musical glimpse into Ravel’s unique heritage in collaboration with the poetry of Paul Morand. The French lyrics are brought to life through distinctive Spanish dance rhythms: the Chanson romanesque evokes the sensual and alluring guajira, which originated in the punto cubano de la Habana but was later adopted by the fiery palos of flamenco in Andalucía. The sublime, almost nostalgic Chanson épique reflects on the composer’s Basque origins through the asymmetrical 5/4 metre of the zortzico folk dance, while the cheerful, slightly inebriated Chanson à boire concludes Ravel’s entire oeuvre with a boisterous Jota aragonesa and his final words, “Je bois à la joie!”
